The Basement Flooding Solution

basement floor

Pat loves her 100+ year-old Prairie Style home in River Forest.  However, she has always had a problem with water seeping (or pouring) into her basement during rainstorms.  While she has solved some of her problems with a back-up sump pump and a basement wall sealer, there are still times when water finds its way into her basement.

Because her one-story older home had only one very tiny bathroom, she recently decided to add a bathroom to the basement.  The result is a large, modern room with an easily accessible shower stall (missing from her main bathroom). However, to get to her bathroom, she had to traverse her dusty, cracked basement floor.

After a recent rainstorm, she again noticed a small amount of seepage, and because of the dusty floor, this small amount of water turned into a muddy mess. This made the floor difficult to clean – and made it less enjoyable to get to her new bathroom. Even when there was no water seepage, the concrete never looked “clean.”

Pat decided it was time to find a solution to her basement floor problem.

Garage Store offers epoxy concrete coating systems for basements. (These coatings are also great for garage floors, exterior areas and even commercial spaces.) Because the epoxy permanently bonds to the concrete flooring, the result is a flood-proof system.  Any water that does enter the basement can easily be pushed to the floor drain or mopped up with no muddy residue.  Moisture that can be emitted through “raw” concrete floors is eliminated, preventing mold and mildew problems.  Because Garage Store uses only commercial grade epoxy products, and employs top-notch installers, the floors have a 30+ year life expectancy.

Once Pat had the floor installed, she noticed less moisture in her basement and the unpleasant odor she had gotten used to was gone. She now enjoys going to her basement.  She looks forward showering in her new space, and doing her laundry on a beautiful floor.

She is considering adding cabinetry and other storage units from Garage Store, which will make her basement more functional and attractive – a place she will enjoy for years to come.

The Psychological Impact of a Cluttered Home – Garage Store Can Help

Organization System

Believe it or not, clutter is a contributing factor to stress.  During the Holiday Season, having a cluttered home, basement or garage can magnify an already stressful time.

The anxious feelings only increase when family and friends stop by. Clutter diverts attention from our otherwise beautiful (and often beautifully decorated) homes.  Once the Holiday gifts are opened, there is the added challenge of finding places to put all of our new “toys.”  And how about finding a place to store the enormous blow-up Santa that you bought on sale this year?

Clutter is not only frustrating, but it can be expensive. When we can’t locate things quickly, we waste time looking.  It may even seem easier to make a quick trip the store to purchase an item that we know exists somewhere in our home. This may trigger feelings of guilt, “I know I need to get organized.”

Here are a few tips to help de-clutter your lives:

  1. Make it fun. Turn on some upbeat music and work as a family one room at a time. Make each person responsible for one part of the room.  Even small children can help if given a little guidance.
  2. Make a plan.  Create designated spaces and put frequently used items in accessible areas near where they will be used. (Make sure you have the right storage solutions for all of your things.)
  3. Store seldom used and out-of-season items out of your way.  Storing on high shelves in the closet, garage or basement will open more space for items you routinely use.
  4. Use closed cabinets, drawers and bins to store things.  Open shelving that is not organized can look and feel messy and disorganized.
  5. If you don’t use it, don’t need it or don’t want it, donate it, recycle it or throw it away.
  6. Label boxes and even cabinets with the contents … and a date.  If you haven’t opened a box in over a year, you can reassess to see if you can discard it.
  7. Finally, when you take something out of its designated area, put it back when you have finished with it.  This sounds easy, but with the many distractions we face in our busy lives, it can be difficult.

Once you have decided to organize your life, check out the many storage options offered by The Garage Store. Because having and using the right organization and storage solutions is a key to an uncluttered and less stressful life, adding more joy to this Holiday Season and beyond.  Call us today to hear more.  (847) 428-8862.

College Lockers by Gladiator Garage WorksIt’s autumn!  And our thoughts turn to a new school year, cooler nights, crisp days …. And College Football!

Also, many of us are starting to consider how to organize all of the “stuff” that has accumulated in our garages over the summer – bicycles, toys, golf clubs, gardening equipment, etc.   We know that if we don’t make room for our vehicles before the snow flies, we will have an even greater task getting out of our driveways.  Snow plowing is much easier when there are no cars in the way, and our drive to work will be a lot more pleasant – and safer – without having to worry about ice and snow limiting our view from the windshield and other windows in the car, or having to think about whether our headlights and brake lights are shining as brightly as they should.

The Garage-Store has an answer, not only about how to organize your garage so your vehicles will fit, but also how to show your loyalty to your favorite college team! With 24 teams already represented, (including Ohio State, University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin)  chances are that you will find a locker to please every fan in your home.

Sports fans want to show off their team pride. Many already display team memorabilia in somewhere in their homes. These cabinets offer not only a way to show team spirit, but also provide the opportunity to store their sports and other equipment.

These six-foot-high welded steel storage lockers, manufactured by Gladiator Garage Works are the perfect place to stash almost anything, freeing garage space for the family car or SUV.  When these specialty cabinets are added to the many other available storage options – including bicycle storage solutions, shelving units, overhead storage shelves and a wide variety of systems with hooks, shelving and cabinetry – any garage can be customized for almost any need.

So why not show your team spirit AND organize your garage. Call The Garage Store at (847) 428-8862 to hear more about these and other options to make your living space as beautiful and organized as possible.

Add More Space for the Holidays

Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

The Holidays are a time for families and friends to gather.  Is your home one of the gathering places?  Or is it too cluttered and cramped for all of the people you would like to have over?

For many families, the basement area is a place to stash everything that doesn’t fit on the main floor of the home.  Worse yet, we usually just walk down the stairs and put the item anywhere we can find a blank space.  Having an organized basement with defined storage solutions like cabinetry and open shelves will not only help with clutter in the basement, but also with the upstairs clutter, as there will be more space downstairs – and items will be easier to find. Items that you were afraid to send to the dank basement can now find a home down there, freeing space in the upstairs living area. Also, the time saved by not having to pick through boxes and bags of “stuff” will be significant – time you can spend doing other things.

And once you have your storage needs met, The Garage Store can also install the decorative flooring system that will make your basement an even more useful extension of your home.  Imagine getting all of the “stuff” off the basement floor, having it coated with a beautiful epoxy finish, and actually being able to use it.  Even if the basement is not fully “finished,” the space might be perfect for teenagers to gather to listen to their music…or for Dad’s Poker Night while mom enjoys the peace and quiet in the upstairs living area. It might even make a better “crafting” space than the kitchen table, giving mom a better place to spread out – without worrying about cleaning up before dinner.

Epoxy flooring systems transform unfinished basements

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

As the weather gets hotter and the tornado horns blast, wouldn’t it be nice to have a basement retreat that is clean, uncluttered and inviting?  Even if your budget doesn’t include a full renovation, adding a flooring system in your basement can be an intelligent and attractive solution to a currently dank and dusty basement. However, choosing the right floor is important, and must meet the challenges of below-ground environments.  Traditional materials, such as carpet, vinyl and even laminate may not be the best options.  Epoxy systems, such as Garage Store’s decorative concrete coating systems can significantly reduce humidity, mold and mildew and can transform any basement into a brighter, more attractive and functional space.  The floors are easy to clean and maintain and reduce the moisture normally emitted through a concrete floor.  With a 30+ year life expectancy, these flooring systems are also terrific value.

Adding a storage system to one (or two) walls can dramatically reduce the clutter, provide the extra storage needed for busy families,  and open the space even more.

Having an unfinished basement with the right flooring system can provide open spaces for activities that might not be possible in a more formal, finished space. When the heat index nears 100 degrees, and It is just too hot to play outside, having a safe open area can give children the perfect spot for roller skating, tricycle or scooter riding, or for almost any game or craft activity.  A craft table can provide a great area for almost any art or craft.  A bonus is that unfinished projects can be left out without cluttering the main floors of the home.

Garage Store is your Chicago basement flooring leader servicing all of Chicago land’s northwest suburbs such as Cary, Barrington, Crystal Lake, Palatine, Schaumburg, Naperville, and all surrounding suburbs including southern Wisconsin and northwest Indiana.
