Fourth Annual Great Garage Giveaway

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

before-507

In 2007, Jim Melchert founded Garage Store to help Chicago area residents reclaim their garages.  Now celebrating the 10th anniversary, and hundreds of satisfied customers, Garage Store is again partnering with The Daily Herald to bring order out of chaos for yet another family.  This is the fourth year that Jim has been participating in this contest to find the ugliest garage and turning it into an inviting, clean, and functional space.

Jim has seen a lot of changes in the last 10 years.  When he started, most people bought garage storage items a la carte. Today, up to 80% of his clients opt for a total makeover.  They understand that not only does an organized garage offer a warm place to park their vehicles, but also reclaims living space. When workbenches, overhead storage units, cabinets and shelves are added to a garage, floor space is reclaimed. Adding a heater and refrigerator can give homeowners a large and beautiful entertaining space. In fact, there are so many storage units and accessories available that the garage can be the most versatile “room” in the house, used for almost any purpose a homeowner can imagine.  An organized and functional garage not only makes the lives of homeowners better, but also adds value to the home.

The Daily Herald and Garage Store are again offering a lucky family the opportunity to realize the full potential of their garages. Entries are being accepted through April 16, 2017.  Homeowners with disorganized (but not garbage-filled) garages are invited to ENTER HERE to win.  Twenty-five semifinalists will be asked to submit a photo of their garage.  Designers from Garage Store will then choose a winner of the $5,000 makeover.  This includes coating the floor, painting the walls, and installing an organization system.  Two runners-up will win an overhead storage rack installed by Garage Store.

Jim Melchert gives an example of the people, who he would like to see enter the Giveaway: “We are looking for people who love their garages like other people love their basements or kitchens.”

Spring is (Almost) Here!

Thursday, March 17th, 2016

While our winter was not a particularly hard one, the chances are your garage is not as organized as it was last summer. You may have snow shovels, snow blowers, and Christmas decorations cluttering up your space. But now that the weather is warming, it’s time to start thinking cleaning up, reorganizing or even repurposing the space.

The Right Storage System Can Make All the Difference The first step towards making the garage a more pleasant space is to take stock of what is already there and how your family would like to use the space. Once you have a vision of how your space should be organized, page through the online catalog of Garage Store. You are sure to find the storage solutions that will make your garage a functional and beautiful part of your home. You might even be able to park your cars there!

The Sporting Family If your family is into any type of sports you will find a way to store your equipment. The right storage system will not only keep the equipment off the floor, clean, and tidy, but also extend its useful life, saving you the cost of replacement. You can add a sports mesh basket, a golf rack and basket, fishing pole rack or a racquet or ski rack. Whatever the sport, you can probably find a way to store your equipment properly. Sports Equipment Carpentry and Crafts For the DIY family, a maple workbench, adjustable workbench or modular gear drawer might be the answer. Throw in a magnetic tool bar, plastic utility bin and a clean-up caddy with places to hold paper towels and cleaning supplies, and you could have the perfect space for any building, painting or crafting project. Crafting organization The Gardener Many homeowners take pride in their yards and gardens. Garage-Store has many options to keep garden tools organized and ready for use. Start with rack shelving for garden supplies. You can then add cradle hooks for hoses and electrical cords, big hooks for weed trimmers and leaf blowers, hooks for shovels and rakes. Mesh shoe racks will keep muddy shoes off the floor and out of the house. You can even add a Scoop Hooks to hold lawn chairs to use when the job is done!
