5 Steps to an Organized Garage [INFOGRAPHIC]

Friday, October 13th, 2017

It’s October, time to put away the pool toys, lawnmower and propane tank and time to pull out the snow blower, shovels, and salt bin.

Throughout the summer, the garage tends to become the dumping ground for a variety of items, causing a cluttered, disorganized area.  Often it becomes so messy that your car no longer fits in its place.

With the leaves piling up outside and snow just around the corner, it’s time to clear the clutter, get organized, and get that car in the garage.

Step One – Sort and Purge

Go through each item in your garage, create piles to donate, trash and keep. Categorize the items based on the season you use them.

Step Two – Group Items to Keep

Organize the items you plan to keep into categories, small items that can fit into bins, large items that need shelves and even larger items that need floor space.  Determine which items fit together, i.e. sports equipment in a bin, summer tools on a shelf, and large power equipment on the floor.

Step Three – Call Garage Store Illinois

Call us for a free estimate to help you figure out how to organize and store the items you are keeping.  We can customize storage options that will work for each season.  Our overhead storage shelves can help free up floor space for large items.  We can also create a shelving area for boxes and bins.

Step Four – Schedule your Garage Makeover

Our team can come and get the shelves, wall units and storage cabinets assembled and set up in your garage.  We can create a space that works specifically for you and your family’s needs.  We carry a variety of shelves, bins, and overhead storage options that will get all your stuff put away neatly and so you can find it and access it easily.

Step Four – Put the Car Away

Once everything has its place and is in its place it’s time to pull in the car.  Now that your items are all organized you can put things away without creating more clutter and you can easily find other items you might need.

Step Five – Enjoy

Relax and enjoy your new space and no longer worry about the clutter in the garage.  Easily put away your Halloween décor this year and effortlessly find your Christmas décor. You no longer need to worry about cleaning the garage.

Fourth Annual Great Garage Giveaway

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

In 2007, Jim Melchert founded Garage Store to help Chicago area residents reclaim their garages.  Now celebrating the 10th anniversary, and hundreds of satisfied customers, Garage Store is again partnering with The Daily Herald to bring order out of chaos for yet another family.  This is the fourth year that Jim has been participating in this contest to find the ugliest garage and turning it into an inviting, clean, and functional space.

Jim has seen a lot of changes in the last 10 years.  When he started, most people bought garage storage items a la carte. Today, up to 80% of his clients opt for a total makeover.  They understand that not only does an organized garage offer a warm place to park their vehicles, but also reclaims living space. When workbenches, overhead storage units, cabinets and shelves are added to a garage, floor space is reclaimed. Adding a heater and refrigerator can give homeowners a large and beautiful entertaining space. In fact, there are so many storage units and accessories available that the garage can be the most versatile “room” in the house, used for almost any purpose a homeowner can imagine.  An organized and functional garage not only makes the lives of homeowners better, but also adds value to the home.

The Daily Herald and Garage Store are again offering a lucky family the opportunity to realize the full potential of their garages. Entries are being accepted through April 16, 2017.  Homeowners with disorganized (but not garbage-filled) garages are invited to ENTER HERE to win.  Twenty-five semifinalists will be asked to submit a photo of their garage.  Designers from Garage Store will then choose a winner of the $5,000 makeover.  This includes coating the floor, painting the walls, and installing an organization system.  Two runners-up will win an overhead storage rack installed by Garage Store.

Jim Melchert gives an example of the people, who he would like to see enter the Giveaway: “We are looking for people who love their garages like other people love their basements or kitchens.”

A Garage Makeover for a Prospect Heights Family

Wednesday, July 16th, 2014

Garage store

I am so thrilled with our new garage. I no longer have to put down the garage door to hide it. It had been a disaster since we moved in 18 years ago. Every year it seemed that something else came up that took precedence over organizing the garage.

Early this year, The Daily Herald and Garage Store teamed up to offer a Garage Makeover Contest, About 80 readers entered to win the $5,000 makeover. The Prospect Heights couple who won were delighted.  While their home is always clean and tidy, their garage had become a dumping ground. The clutter, including painting supplies, sports equipment, gardening tools and hand-me-downs, prevented the homeowner from parking his car in his garage.  In fact, only his wife’s car fit in the garage – barely. His automobile had not seen the inside of the garage for more than 10 years. The 65-year-old concrete floor was also cracked and pitted, which only added to the shabbiness of the space.  Even when the area was thoroughly swept, the dust and dirt were impossible to remove. That all changed when the Garage Store entered the scene to give the couple a “new” garage.  The new space is functional and attractive. It includes new flooring. After filling the cracks with a flexible material, the entire floor was resurfaced, including a four-inch lip that acts like a baseboard and keeps water and melting snow from wicking up the walls, and makes cleaning the garage a breeze. Storage solutions were added, including the cabinets, shelving, racks and hooks that hold everything from drop cloths and painting supplies to children’s sports equipment, gardening tools, and more.  There is now even room for the couple’s two cars!

Daily Herald Article: Garages overflow from lack of organization

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Garage-Store was featured in a Daily Herald article on April 8, 2013:

In many homes, the garage has become a dumping ground for seasonal items, sports equipment, gardening supplies and much more, to the point where many families cannot even park a car in their garage anymore.

“Your garage is a room of your house. You need to embrace it and make the best possible use of that space,” said Jim Melchert, owner of Garage Store, based in East Dundee…See the Full Article

The Ultimate Garage

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Garage Store is your professional installer of garage flooring, overhead storage, garage accessories and garage organization systems. As the leading Chicagoland garage organization provider Garage Store has been featured in many news articles, magazines and tv spot lights featuring our outstanding products and services. Recently Garage Store was featured in Naperville’s Magazine talking about our amazing car lifts that we install to help families with multiple cars fit into smaller spaces. Here is what the article said about us.

The Ultimate Garage…

At first, your garage is just a little cluttered, a tiny bit untidy. Then you hang the tennis balls from the ceiling in order to avoid running over some large plastic object your child hasn’t used in three years. In the latter stages, parking your car becomes a high stakes game of “Operation.” Finally, you find yourself brushing snow off your car in the dead of winter as you stand shivering in front of your nicely heated garage.

The garage has become the storage area of last resort for many families, but when there is no actual storage left for the intended object -the family car -homeowners increasingly are turning to professional storage design companies to remake clutter central into the ultimate garage.

In 2006, The Washington Post reported that retail sales of garage organization products had increased 38 percent over five years. Sales of such products reached $688 million in 2005, the paper reported.

Both epoxy and snap-together floor coverings provide a look that is neater and easier to clean than concrete floors, which soak up oil, dirt and grime. But perhaps the biggest trend in garage storage is slotted wall systems. The slotted or channeled systems create custom cabinets that often hang up off the floor and can be slid along the walls after they are installed.

Many custom garage companies, such as Garage Store in the Design Point Mall on Route 59, offer custom-installed car lifts. Such car lifts can double the car storage of garages by hydraulically raising one car, allowing a second to drive in under it. These systems generally cost under $4,000 and require about 10.5 feet of clearance. These lifts are best used for secondary or classic cars that are rarely driven. The lifts also can be used to store all-terrain vehicles or riding lawn mowers.

However much you spend, it’s best to let the expert organizers see and evaluate your garage in its worst state. Don’t clean up before they arrive to assess your storage needs. Also, experts advise getting as much storage capacity as possible behind closed cabinet doors to help hide clutter.

Do’s & Don’ts For Cleaning Your Epoxy Floor Coatings

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Garage Store’s epoxy, polyerua and polyaspartic floor coating systems are tough and non-absorptive, however, harsh cleaners may damage a polymer floor top coat.  It is advisable to use materials that are neutral with a pH factor between 7 and 10.  Garage Store recommends that you avoid all-purpose cleaners or soaps containing water soluble, inorganic or crystallizing salts, harmful high alkali or acid ingredients. As your professional garage, basement, commercial and exterior floor installers, there are some suggestions that we provide our customers on ways to properly clean and maintain there epoxy floor coatings. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts for your epoxy floor.

DO test all cleaning products in a small test area before cleaning the entire floor.

DO dust mop your high traffic floors daily, this not only picks up the dust, but also the grit tracked onto the floor.  The grit acts as an abrasive on your hard surface floor and will eventually dull the surface.

DO scrub your new decorative polymer floor a minimum of once a week for the initial two to three months in order to limit dust which may adhere to the surface.  After this period, a weekly scrub is advised, depending on the amount of foot and automobile traffic.  Always rinse your floors well to prevent a build-up of cleaner residue that could become slippery.

DO allow your cleaner time to react as designed to loosen foreign matter.  Several minutes should be adequate, but DO NOT allow the cleaning solution to dry on surface.

DO use a 3-M white type pad under the scrubbing machine during normal maintenance procedures.

DON’T use surface waxes or sealers.  Use of such products can result in slippery surfaces.

DON’T use cleaners containing water soluble, inorganic or crystallizing salts, harmful alkali or acids.  Use of such products could prove harmful to your decorative polymer floor.

DON’T try miracle cleaners on your floor without performing a small surface test first.

DON’T mix cleaners and always follow manufacturer instructions.

As your garage floor restoration and coating experts, our goal is to provide you with many different coating solutions. Below are a few of our most popular coating solutions our customers choose to use for their flooring.

Neat Coatings/Systems are among the most popular often used as an epoxy, polyurea or polyaspartic systems. Typically applied in two to three coats, Neat Coatings/Systems has the ability to endure rough usage such as cars driving over it and children’s outdoor toys and bicycles. The number of coats will depend on how much your garage is being used and the number of coats also depends on the strength of coatings required.  Many choices are available to chose from, such as the color and types of flakes.  This is one option to your Garage Floor Coating Solutions.

Applied in a one life system to create thickness, Slurry Systems or Trowel Systems are great for repairs and filling concrete imperfections. In order to meet the needs of the application, polymers need to be blended. This Garage Floor Coating Solution can help enhance your floor by adding silica sand to wet polymer. At this time there should only be dry sand on the surface of the floor. Finish off the floor with a top coat pigment or a clear coat.
