Three Myths About Garage Floor Coatings

November 14th, 2016

11garagefloor1-300x203

Professionally coated flooring systems are a great way to keep your home in tip-top shape.  Coating systems in a garage can turn a relatively unused area into another room in your house.

Even though the area is not used as frequently, garage floors tend to get the most benefit from a coating system.  Garage floors usually develop cracks and pitting after a few years due to settling and weather.  The porous nature of concrete harbors dirt, bacteria and encourages enduring stains from fluids and car debris.

These stains make the floor appear dingy and can be very difficult to clean.  A floor coating system protects the floors and makes them easy to clean. Floor coating systems are also low maintenance and require little upkeep.

There are many do-it-yourself products that claim to make the process as easy, durable and high-quality as having it done professionally.  We have tested and disproved many floor coating myths. Here are a few examples:

MYTH #1 – Floor Coating Systems are just “fancy” paint.

Generally speaking, epoxy is paint. In fact, the definition of paint is “a colored substance that is spread over a surface and dries to leave a thin decorative or protective coating.” The difference is that while epoxy may be classified as paint, not all paint is epoxy..

Epoxy is defined  as “very tough, very adhesive, and resistant to chemicals….used to make protective coatings and glues.”

The level of protection this coating provides far exceeds the paint purchased at a hardware store.

MYTH #2 – All garage floor coatings are the same.

All coating materials are not created equally.  Jim Melchert, founder of Garage-Store.com, explains, “epoxy, polyurea and polyaspartic are various coating systems that use various polymer resins and curing agents that are all packaged separately, but then are mixed, just prior to use. However, when mixed and cured, the coating system becomes a solid polymer system that offers characteristics such as superior adhesion, hardness, UV stability and chemical resistance. These characteristics are dependent on the type of resins, curing agents, solvents and fillers used. The quality, cost, and durability of the coating system is related to the purpose. Be sure to consult a certified installer and review product specifications to ensure the correct product is used for your purpose.”

MYTH #3 – A quick sweep and clean of the floor and it’s ready to be coated.

If you want your flooring to bond and make sure it seals and coats properly just a quick clean is not enough.  If the floor is not prepped correctly, it will not result in a beautifully coated floor.

The concrete must be resurfaced with a diamond grinder or short blaster to remove imperfections in the surface as well as debris.  The cracks/pits are then repaired.  After the prep work is done the coating can be completed.

As you can see, a applying a coating system is so much more than just painting on some epoxy and calling it a day.  Services provided by a professional usually go beyond what the typical DIY kit can provide.  So, if you want it done right and you want a beautiful garage floor call a professional.  Check out our Flooring Page to see how quickly and conveniently we can transform any floor – inside or out.

Garage Storage Can Make Your Halloween Even More Fun

October 14th, 2016

Halloween is almost here!  If you are a homeowner in the Chicago area, you probably have at least a few spooky decorations to put around your house. Some of you have more than a few.  Whether it is a large scary spider crawling up the front of your house, a wicked witch flying over your roof, some ghostly apparitions in your trees or a giant blow-up pumpkin, you probably enjoy scaring the kiddies that come knocking at your door for treats.  And soon after the trick or treaters have scurried away with their candy, it is time to think about those Christmas decorations.

Is it any wonder that folks seem to accumulate so much “stuff” that they often find it difficult to park their vehicles in their garages after all of the holiday décor has been stored away for another year?

The good news is that even those with the most ambitiously adorned lawns and houses will find a place for the cars and the décor if the garage is organized correctly.

Garage Store has so many organizational options available that almost any garage can be outfitted to accommodate whatever treasures homeowners wish to store, including their automobiles!

Installing overhead storage may be the easiest and smartest way to store those once-a-year items.  There are adjustable shelves in all sizes that can be easily raised and lowered for convenient access.  Because most garages are high enough to accommodate these shelves, there will be plenty of floor space for any size vehicle.  Stationary shelving can also be used to good advantage – again, keeping the floor open for cars and even SUV’s.

Could it Be September – Already?

bicycle

After a long, hot summer, the crisp mornings and cooler evenings are very welcome.  But the days are still warm and riding a bicycle is especially inviting on an autumn day. However, make no mistake, the signs are all there – winter is not far off.  It will soon be time to find somewhere to store that bike.

After a summer of using the garage as a dumping ground for bicycles, outdoor sports equipment, toys, gardening equipment, and tools, the garage can get cluttered. Parking in the driveway instead of the garage may not be a big deal until you are chipping ice and digging the family car out after the first Northern Illinois snow or ice storm. At that point, parking in a protected garage might suddenly become a priority.

For many homeowners with a growing family, the “stuff” that needs to be stored seems to grow exponentially.  It may seem impossible to find places for all of the accumulated items that are important during one season, but useless in the next.

Garage Store Illinois has the answer.  The technicians at Garage Store will evaluate your belongings and suggest storage options that are as unique as you and your family. They have so many specialty products that they can find a solution for almost every storage need. So call Garage Store at to organize your garage to store whatever needs to be stored. You are sure to find what you need — whether you need a place to store golf clubs, hang bicycles or even install a lift to store dad’s Corvette convertible until next spring.

Call Garage Store before winter and you will be able enjoy a few minutes of extra sleep,  as you ignore the snow brush and simply drive out of your dry garage.

A Multipurpose Garage Makeover

August 16th, 2016

garage-store-makeover

Each year Garage Store and the Daily Herald sponsor a garage makeover contest. And each year Jim Melchert, owner of Garage Store, focuses on ways a garage can improve the lives of homeowners. Two years ago, Jim focused on how a garage could become more organized and functional. Last year, he focused on the health benefits a dust-free garage can have on a child with respiratory problems.

This year, the challenge was to show how a garage could be used as another room of the house. The contest winner, a retired police officer with four adult children and six grandchildren, was looking for ways to make his garage a more inviting space to entertain family and friends.

The main issue was the garage floor with several large cracks and a lot of pitting from years of road salt. The homeowner had always wanted to have an epoxy floor in the garage, but saw the poor results his friends had when they did it themselves. While watching Jim’s crew professionally install the commercial grade floor coating, he realized that this was not a simple DIY project. He admits to being very impressed with the talent and skill of the crew, and even more impressed with the end result.

The $5,000 makeover also included two wall storage units, two tall cabinets and two workbenches with cabinets below.

When the project was complete, the homeowner and his wife agreed that Jim had more than accomplished his mission. The garage is now not only a place for the homeowners to entertain family and friends, but also a workshop and vehicle repair shop, as well as a well-organized storage area. It will also be a “man cave” and escape zone.

He even has a place to park his vehicles!
When explaining how he felt when he got the news that he had won the makeover, he said, “Oh my God, it was like my birthday, Christmas and Father’s Day rolled into one! I was in heaven. It was amazing. I feel so fortunate.”

See the full story of this amazing makeover in the August 14 edition of the Daily Herald.

A Gift Dad Will Love

June 16th, 2016

CarPad at Garage Store

June is the month when we think about our dads and all of the wonderful things they have done for us.   If you haven’t yet purchased that snappy new tie or sports-themed  T-shirt, you might want to consider a gift that will last longer and be a lot more useful.    CarPads are a great addition to any garage.  They protect the garage (and house) floors from sandy feet after a trip to the beach or muddy feet after a fishing trip.

CarPad is a year-round industrial vinyl garage floor cover made in the USA.  It not only protects from dirty little feet, but is impervious to solvents, oil, salt, battery acid and antifreeze. Because the pads have a 1” flexible round raised edge, the mess is contained and does not spread to the rest of the garage.  The pad can accommodate from 60-120 gallons of liquid.  Clean up is easy with a broom, squeegee or wet/dry shop vac.

All CarPads are waterproof, non-flammable and come with a 30-day money back guarantee and a 90-day warranty on workmanship. These 20 mm. vinyl floor covers are available in silver or gold and come in various sizes.  They can be used under a car, truck, snow mobile and more. The pads should be approximately 1-1/2 to 2 feet longer than the vehicles parked on them, and have a 6-12” border on either side.

Once installed, these CarPads will keep the garage floor clean and dry, and offer increased safety and protection in any garage.

So this Father’s Day, think about something that Dad will really appreciate. Visit Garage Store at 1082 Rock road Lane, East Dundee, Illinois, or browse their website to see the full line of garage accessories, including tool storage, bike storage, lighting, cleaning products and more.

It’s Father’s Day – What’s in Your Garage?

May 19th, 2016

applianceIf, like most of us, you can’t afford to put a shiny new car in your father’s garage, the next best thing might be to organize the garage to accommodate the vehicle he already has.

But even more than a place to park the car, carefully outfitted garages can act as a second room in the house.  Whether dad likes to work on his car, do some carpentry or just needs a place to keep his golf clubs, basketballs, etc. Garage Store has the storage and organization accessories that can make the garage a place that dad, and the rest of the family, will enjoy.

A great garage might start with an epoxy floor system that is not only beautiful, but so easy to clean that dad will wonder why he waited so long to have it installed.  If the epoxy floor is not in the budget, a CarPad industrial vinyl garage floor cover might be the answer. It protects floors from mud, water, snow, salt, oils and solvents – the perfect place to park the car.

Garage Lighting

Any garage will be a more pleasant and useful space with great lighting.  A great solution is the zero degree start cold weather ballast lighting fixture.  It is the perfect solution for any garage. Featuring instant-on, quiet operation, it will work in spaces that get down to 0 degrees F – a perfect solution to lighting garages in our cold Chicago winters.  The fixture is ceiling mounted and can not only be used in garages, but also porches, basements and other areas of the home.  Garage store has lighting options that will fit in almost any space.

Gladiator Garage appliances are the perfect answer to long-term food storage because they are designed specifically for the garage. That means that they are built to operate in the hottest (and coldest) conditions.  These appliances will help alleviate overcrowding of kitchen appliances. Even better, a garage refrigerator will provide dad with a cold drink without having him track through the house when he is in the midst of a project.

Garage Store can help make every area of your home more functional and more beautiful.  Why not stop by to see how they can help make Father’s Day truly special for dad – even if you can’t give him a new car.

Is Your Garage Floor a Health Hazard?

April 14th, 2016

Danger. Slippery Floor
The mission of the National Floor Safety Institute is to aid in the prevention of slips, trips and falls. Their research shows that 55% of all slip and fall accidents are caused by hazardous walking surfaces.

The CDC adds statistics on adverse effects of slips and falls:

• One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury.
• Each year, 2.5 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.
• Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries
• Adjusted for inflation, the direct medical costs for fall injuries are $34 billion annually. Hospital costs account for two-thirds of the total.
(See the full report here.)

Garage Floors are Common Culprits

Have you ever been in a hurry to get inside your garage during a rainstorm? If so, you may have experience a slip, as your wet shoes hit your slick garage floor. Garage floors are notoriously slippery. When water drains off a wet car in a rainstorm, the floor can be a major hazard. Cracked and uneven surfaces in an older garage are also sources of danger. Even on a sunny day, it is easy to slip when oil and grease cause the floor to become slick.

Basements are not immune

Basement floors can also be a source of danger. Condensation in the summer can cause the floor to become slippery. Even a dry basement floor can be slick. If there are imperfections or cracks, the hazards are even greater. Have you ever walked to the basement with a few boxes in your arms, only to trip on an uneven floor?
Garage-Store Can Solve the Slippery Floor Problem
A slip and fall in the garage or basement can cost thousands of dollars, not to mention the pain and suffering that may ensue. Garage Store can add various textured surfaces and ant-slip media options embedded into the topcoat of their epoxy finish for maximum surface grip performance.

Other Health Benefits

While slips and falls are one source of danger, bare concrete is a porous surface that harbors dirt, mold, mildew, harmful bacteria, and other hard to clean material. The coatings offered by Garage Store provide a barrier that resists bacteria and makes for quick and easy clean up to keep your space healthy and clean.
If the health and safety of your family is important, why not give Garage-Store a call. They have the right surface options for any indoor or outdoor space(847) 428-8862
