Our 2020 Great Garage Makeover Winners’ garage has been given “the works”. Out of 3,135 entries this year, Theresa and Billy Miller of South Elgin now have a new and improved garage.
The Millers have lived at their 1980’s 2-story home in South Elgin for 14 years. Their small two-car garage was home to their small SUV and a pick-up truck, taking up most of the space with little room for storage. Even getting in and out of their vehicles was a challenge in the space.
“We had things like shovels and rakes hanging from old hooks that we bought at the hardware store, but they stuck out too far and sometimes fell out of the wall,” Theresa explained.
The back of the garage had some open space, but the sides of the garage lacked any room when both cars were parked in the area. Theresa complained that she was always moving things around and bumping into things when getting in and out of the car.
When she saw the contest mentioned in the Daily Herald she entered, without even telling Billy because she thought winning was a long shot.
The Winning Entry
Theresa’s application stated, “your products would be so helpful. A better floor would make it so much easier to clean. Some storage on the sides of the garage would reduce the amount of stuff we have to walk around when getting out of the car and maybe some elevated storage on the back wall above the cars could be used to store things.”
Selected out of over 3,000 entries, the Millers received a new garage floor; a fresh coat of pain on the ceiling, walls, and door to the house; overhead storage; new shelving units; and hooks for tool storage.
The complete makeover is valued at $5,000.
“My husband is a do-it-yourself guy but even he admits he never could have done all of this himself, particularly the floor,” Theresa said. “We chose a speckled gray floor which looks wonderful and will probably last forever. Now Billy is spending hours out there, enjoying the ‘new garage’ smell and planning where he is going to put everything.”
Winning Team
Our team has years of experience with applying commercial flooring systems to manufacturing facilities, automotive centers, retail locations and restaurants. These skills transfer over to the residential work.
“Jim Melchert and Nic Verdonk from Garage Store were wonderful. They worked with us every step of the way and were super excited to help us make the most of our limited space,” Theresa said.
Your Space Organized
Garage Store has been helping homeowners transform their garages (and other spaces in homes and commercial locations) since 2007. The Millers’ garage was a great way to showcase how a smaller garage with limited space could be transformed and make use of every area.
