82% of homes have 2-car garages, or larger, yet only 25% use their garage to park their cars inside.
While garages serve many different purposes, the primary function of the garage is to house cars. However, for approximately 1 out of 4 Americans, the garage is so cluttered and disorganized it can’t fit even one car.
Protect Your Investment
A car is a very large investment for most people. The average cost of a new car in the U.S. in 2022 is $42,000.00. A vehicle is likely worth much more than all of the “stuff” stored in the garage.
Parking your car in the garage shelters it from bad weather, preserves the car’s value, protects it from vandalism or theft, avoids accidental damage, and best of all, it can lower your insurance premiums.
It’s not as overwhelming as you think. Take it step-by-step and you will soon have an orderly garage that will fit the car.
Make a Plan
- Divide and Conquer
Visualize specific areas to store your things, or zones. Designate a zone for each, including sports equipment, tools, lawn equipment, etc. It is a good idea to also envision swapping items, moving seasonal items more toward the front and storing away the out-of-season items, then switching when the season changes. Once this is established it is easier to start planning the space and organizing.
2. Cast Off the Clutter
Clutter is a major issue when trying to organize your stuff. The garage is usually the place where things that don’t fit anywhere else end up. Most homeowners have no idea what is even in the garage. Schedule a “clear-out” and get rid of the stuff you never use and don’t need, donate it, or toss it in the trash. Set aside the stuff you are keeping and need to organize.
3. Look Up for Organization
Things don’t need to just sit on the floor or get placed on a shelf. There are a variety of options to maximize the space in your garage, including overhead shelving, wall systems, free-standing shelving, and cabinets. Consider the vertical storage in the space to maximize the floor space.
