In 2007, Jim Melchert founded Garage Store to help Chicago area residents reclaim their garages. Now celebrating the 10th anniversary, and hundreds of satisfied customers, Garage Store is again partnering with The Daily Herald to bring order out of chaos for yet another family. This is the fourth year that Jim has been participating in this contest to find the ugliest garage and turning it into an inviting, clean, and functional space.
Jim has seen a lot of changes in the last 10 years. When he started, most people bought garage storage items a la carte. Today, up to 80% of his clients opt for a total makeover. They understand that not only does an organized garage offer a warm place to park their vehicles, but also reclaims living space. When workbenches, overhead storage units, cabinets and shelves are added to a garage, floor space is reclaimed. Adding a heater and refrigerator can give homeowners a large and beautiful entertaining space. In fact, there are so many storage units and accessories available that the garage can be the most versatile “room” in the house, used for almost any purpose a homeowner can imagine. An organized and functional garage not only makes the lives of homeowners better, but also adds value to the home.
The Daily Herald and Garage Store are again offering a lucky family the opportunity to realize the full potential of their garages. Entries are being accepted through April 16, 2017. Homeowners with disorganized (but not garbage-filled) garages are invited to ENTER HERE to win. Twenty-five semifinalists will be asked to submit a photo of their garage. Designers from Garage Store will then choose a winner of the $5,000 makeover. This includes coating the floor, painting the walls, and installing an organization system. Two runners-up will win an overhead storage rack installed by Garage Store.
Jim Melchert gives an example of the people, who he would like to see enter the Giveaway: “We are looking for people who love their garages like other people love their basements or kitchens.”
