The average American garage, where clutter goes to die.
In a Consumer Reports nationwide poll of garage owners, 62% of Americans said their garage was “crowded, disorganized, or a mess.” Filled with sports equipment, lawn mowers, and tools. Almost a third of those surveyed said they could not park their car in the garage.
It’s time to take back the garage, organize your stuff, and get that car in the garage.
Getting Started
The first order of business is to divide your items into 4 groups: sell, donate, trash, and keep. This will give you a good idea of how much storage you need.
After getting rid of some junk and organizing what you are going to keep it’s time to organize the garage into zones: rarely used items, sports stuff, gardening/lawn tools, bulk items, DIY/workspace.
Now it’s time to get the right storage and organization systems to make your garage work best for your family and your vehicles.
Rarely Used Items
Rarely used items, such as holiday décor, old toys, paperwork, etc. overhead shelving is the best option. This frees up floor space and gets the stuff that isn’t used every day up and out of the way. Overhead storage is available as stationary shelves adjusted by the size and hung by the height you desire. Overhead storage is also available as a moveable, adjustable rack that moves up and down easily so you can access your items.
Sports Equipment
A terrific option for the oddly sized sports equipment is the Gladiator® GarageWorks wall organization system. These wall systems are heavy duty and provide several different options including hooks, shelves, bins, baskets, and racks. These items come in a variety of sizes and can be moved on the wall system to make storage simple. Odd sized, large items like bicycles can be hung from the wall or can also be hung from stationary overhead racks.
Gardening/Lawn Tools/Tools
Gardening tools can be stored in a hanging (and movable) wall cabinet or in modular cabinets, available with wheels so these too can be moved. Cabinets come in a variety of sizes, so there is bound to be one that will fit your tools. Hooks and bins are also available for the Gladiator GarageWorks wall organization system, allowing room on the storage wall for the larger tools like shovels, rakes, hoses, etc.
For the smaller tools, yard or otherwise, Gladiator’s Modular GearDrawers provide excellent full-extension, adjustable drawers with cushioned liners. The tops of these drawers also provide a great work surface.
Bulk Items
Oversized items like tires, propane tanks, water bottles, etc. can all be stored on the heavy-duty rack shelving available from Gladiator GarageWorks. Shelves come in a variety of sizes and the shelves are adjustable so they will fit just about anything you need to put up and out of the way.
DIY/Workspace
There are several options for your needs available, from adjustable workbenches to mobile workstations, all come with hardwood tops and can either be moveable or stationary. Placing a wall organization system above the work area provides an area to hang tools or add shelves to place items onto and out of the way.
