Garages have become more important in the housing market in the last several years. According to Realtor Magazine, the rise in demand for garages is directly related to more space and amenities as part of a property, 82% of home buyers agree a garage is an important factor when purchasing a new home.
In addition to the need for more space, garages have become more than just the storage area for the lawnmower and Christmas decorations.
For many homeowners, garages are now the main design element of the front of the home, as well as the focal point of the exterior and they want an area that is as polished and appealing as the rest of their home but doesn’t lose any of its function.
History of the Garage in New Home Construction
Back in the 1960s and 1970s and the suburban sprawl of new home developments, the focus of the home was on the front porch, which was the social activity of the neighborhood. Many older neighborhoods have the garage located in an alley behind the house.
A few decades later, the focus shifted to the back of the house as the main outdoor social area, moving the social focus to the backyard. Thus, shifting garages more toward the street and at the front of the house.
Within just a generation, garages replaced the front porch as the main element of design for new home construction.
The Garage Today
Most new homes are built with a 2-car garage (in fact some towns have a clause that new construction must include at a minimum a 2-car garage.) 32% of homeowners think the garage is one of the most important rooms in the house.
So, it makes sense that home buyers consider a garage as a top factor in a new home purchase. An organized, clean, and attractive garage can add value to your home and be a selling point.
Not to mention the benefits of having a clean and organized garage to store items and part the car.
The Importance of a Garage
Garages are no longer the place to shove your boxes of old junk, half empty cans of paint, and garbage. Garages have become a part of the home and homeowners want that part of the home to look as elegant and organized as the rest of their home.
According to Gladiator® GarageWorks, the garage is so much more than a place to park the car.
- 27% of people use the garage for hobbies.
- 23% of people use the garage to work on cars.
- 19% of people use the garage for products like woodworking or carpentry.
- 13% of people use the garage as an exercise/sports area.
According to Karl Champley, a master builder and a home improvement TV/Radio personality, “people take great pride in their homes – organizing, decorating and showing off various rooms of their house, especially on social media, but the garage is the forgotten room of the home and those same people who are proud of their home are embarrassed by how the garage looks.”
